What happens on the day

The pandit begins with a purification and a sankalpa naming the family and the purpose of the day. A havan is lit. The boy is given the janai and taught the Gayatri mantra, then takes symbolic alms from the women of the family. The ceremony usually runs about four hours and is followed by a meal.

What to prepare

You will need a clean space for the fire, a smoke alarm you can isolate for the duration, and the samagri list your pandit provides. Discuss the date well ahead — auspicious days for bratabandha cluster in particular months.
